Certain types of contracts must be in writing pursuant to the statute of fraud.
Many contracts need to be in writing to make sure fraud is not committed. Without things put in writing, it's hard to know what the original terms of the agreement were and how to make sure everything if well followed through by both parties. When they're in writing, terms are enforceable.
