The Western Schism (also known as the Papal Schism) was a split within the Catholic Church that lasted from 1378-1417. During that extended amount of time, three men all claimed to be the pope.

The Western Schism was solved in 1417 by the Roman Catholic church who held numerous councils, and declared the throne to be empty dismissing the 3 men that claimed it in order for Pope Martin V to be elected
